Pirates of Penzance - by Gilbert & Sullivan
Pirates follows the story of Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to pirates instead of pilots, and due to his leap year birthday, must continue until he is 84 years old. He is in love with Mabel, who agrees to wait for him — really? Pirates shows the power of poetry to express our grief, our joy, our despair, our love, and our honor.
Pirates includes “Poor wandering one”, “Hail Poetry”, “With cat-like tread” and the much-parodied "Major-General's Song”. Pirates ran for 787 performances on Broadway, winning three Tony Awards and had a successful film adaptation, starring Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt and Angela Lansbury. Pirates is one of the three most popular works by G&S.
